+++ Beim ehemaligen Kernkraftwerk Rheinsberg gibt es aufgrund einer Brückensperrung eine kleine Umleitung. Diese ist ausgeschildert und verlängert die Rundwanderung um wenige 100 Meter. +++

The Great Stechlin Lake, also called "The Stechlin", nestled in the hilly landscape, is one of the largest clear water lakes in northern Germany. The circumnavigation is a special experience - with the trees on the lakeshore, mainly beeches, and pines, in between you can almost always see the glittering water and hear soft birdsong.

The old beech stand with its deadwood trees is the habitat of many birds and other animal species and not least a worthwhile photo motif. The route crosses the secured area of the former Rheinsberg nuclear power plant and crosses the so-called outlet channel into the Stechlinsee. There are only a few boats and no motors, but the sound of the wind in the trees and many places around the lake where you can sit and listen to the natural silence.

Route description: The hike on the Stechlinsee circular trail begins at the Stechlinsee Center in Neuglobsow. Go straight on along Stechlinseestraße, past the Glass Museum to the information boards at the lake. The loop can be walked in both directions. Following the signs of the circular route and the markings of the E10 (blue line), keep to the right and follow the path, always along the lakeshore to the Mordbuche with its gruesome history. In the early summer of 1903, a tragedy occurred here. A wedding party ended the celebration with a walk. The bride was the daughter of a head forester and a young forester, who was in love with the bride, followed the walkers. He shot the girl, who died a few days later, and then killed himself. Some men kept vigil at the scene until the police arrived. One of them carved the crime scene in the bark of the beech tree, the carving can still be seen today. After about 2 km you reach Sun Bay, the northern tip of the lake. Now in a southerly direction (also marked green line) you will reach the Blue Cow, a bay that spreads out in a westerly direction. Before you get to the site of the former nuclear power plant, there is a sign for the location of the village of Stechlin, as it was described by Fontane. Soon after, the trail turns to the left. To help with orientation, the marker Red Line can be used. After crossing a canal, which was important for the water supply of the power plant, the character of the path changes for a while. We leave the bank and walk slightly uphill through the pine forest, then down to the Polzow Canal. Again, for a while you walk along the shore. A wide view of the water surface is limited by the peninsula Ochsenkopfhölzchen. The facilities of the Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries and the German Meteorological Service are bypassed on wide forest paths. Another small piece through forest with beech and pine trees, then the playground from the beginning of the loop is reached.
