Excursion into the city's history along the former Berlin Wall, 160 km

The Berlin Wall divided the German capital and separated West Berlin from the territory of the GDR. Today you can discover the remains of the old border fortifications on the 160 km long Wall Trail by bike. The tour starts in the centre of Berlin at Potsdamer Platz. It heads south-east through the city centre to Schönefeld. The route then heads west along the former border strip to Potsdam. Many places of remembrance tell great stories there. The route runs for about 15 kilometres through the former border area of Brandenburg's capital. In Neubabelsberg, you cycle past villas steeped in history and touch the media city where major DEFA films were produced in GDR times. If you look closely, you will notice the different colours of paint on the Glienicke Bridge. It bears witness to the division into East and West at that time and the exchange of captured spies in the middle of the bridge. From Potsdam, the route leads via Spandau to the northern tip of Berlin to Frohnau. Via Pankow and Wedding you reach the inner city area again. On what is probably the most interesting section, the trail runs 18 kilometres right through the city centre - along the former dividing line of the city through Berlin's post-war history.

Trail condition/track development

Except for smaller sections along the Teltow Canal, through Düppeler Forst and along Tegeler Fließ, the route is asphalted throughout. A former course of the Wall, parts of which are protected as monuments, on which you can cycle, but which cannot be compared with classic, newly built cycle routes.
