Along Lake Ruppin we leave Fontane's birthplace Neuruppin to turn off towards Fehrbellin shortly before Wustrau: a magnificent luch landscape with small canals and lush meadows rewards us on this tour that leads to Paulinenaue.

With this stage of the cycle tour, we leave the birthplace of Theodor Fontane, Neuruppin, along Lake Ruppin. The tour now leads in the direction of Havelland. The next Fontane town is Fehrbellin. Here the route of Day Tour 4 crosses the FONTANE.RAD route between Oranienburg and Potsdam. Originally, there was a wide marshy area here, in which an entire army sank long before Fontane's time: in 1675, the Swedes lost the Battle of Fehrbellin against the Brandenburg horsemen, although they were outnumbered by the Swedes. Later, Frederick William I had the area drained and peat cutting became more important. The route to Paulinenaue leads through the Havelländisches Luch, where Fontane marvelled at the numerous marsh birds.
