Zernikow is located in the north of the former county of Ruppin, 12 km south-east of Rheinsberg. For a long time, Zernikow was the seat of the knightly dynasty of Zernikow, the feudatories of the county of Ruppin. In 1740, Crown Prince Friedrich gave the Zernikow estate to his chamberlain and confidant Michael Gabriel Fredersdorff.
