The name Stechlin does not only refer to Fontane's novel or the lake, but also to a municipality. It consists of the villages Dollgow, Menz and Neuglobsow/Dagow and is located in the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park between the Ruppiner Seenland and the Mecklenburg Lake District in the Brandenburg Lake District. The tourist information centre for the region is located in the glassmaker's house in Neuglobsow.

The state-recognised resort of Neuglobsow is the only door to the Great Stechlinsee. This body of water, made legendary by Theodor Fontane's last novel, is a clean lake, around 97 million cubic metres of water on an area of 4.25 km², a complete circumnavigation covers almost 17 km, the deepest point measures almost 70 metres. According to legend, Lake Stechlin is protected by a red rooster, which is still the landmark of Neuglobsow today.
