Gransee town wall with Ruppin Gate

The town wall of Gransee is 1,750 metres long and almost completely preserved. The Ruppiner Tor (Ruppiner Gate) in the most beautiful late Gothic brick architecture is a real eye-catcher. A gallery in the gate building shows changing exhibitions.

Gransee... "was a firm town, perhaps the firmest town in the county of Ruppin", wrote Fontane in his Wanderungen. This impression still comes to mind today when you walk around the 14th century town wall.

To the side of the Ruppiner Tor is another simple passage, the so-called Waldemar Gate. In the 14th century, the citizens of Gransee fell for the swindles of a "false Waldemar". As punishment, they had to build a wall around the gate through which he could enter the town unhindered and cut a smaller gate into the town wall next to it. It was not until 1818 that the Prussian king allowed the old town gate to be opened.
